A medieval borgo, the historical centre of Teggiano (SA) is located on an isolated high plain that dominates the Vallo di Diano. The Norman Castle was built by the Sanseverino family who had decided to make Teggiano their stronghold.
There are noteworthy churches: St. Michael Archangel; the Annunziata, Romanesque in origin with Baroque additions; St. Augustine and St. Peter, both pre-Renaissance and the imposing Cathedral of St. Mary Major. The historical centre develops across alleyways and squares lined by noble palaces that encapsulate at least 600 years of history, stretching from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
An annual appointment is the “Alla tavola della Principessa Costanza” event, when the borgo and its inhabitants evoke its medieval past. Teggiano, with the Vallo di Diano, is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
