A Haunting in Venice, directed and interpreted by Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh, is inspired by Agatha Christie’s novel Hallowe’en Party.
The famous investigator Hercule Poirot, now retired and in voluntary exile, lives in glorious post-war Venice. On All Saints Eve, a blustery dark night, Poirot is invited to take part in a séance at a decadent and ghostly mansion. Reluctant, but also intrigued by the idea of unmasking the trick, Poirot agrees to attend; when a guest is killed, he finds himself in the midst of a sinister world of shadows and secrets. The incredible, infested mansion was built at London’s Pinewood Studios.
Combining both real and created locations, the unique settings of the lagoon city are present throughout the film. The production shot for several weeks in January 2023 in a range of famous places including piazza San Marco, ghostly in the early light of a rainy dawn with fog coverings its monuments; the clock tower, Basilica and bell tower of St Mark, the Library of St. Mark.
Other locations included: the bridge of sighs, the basin of St. Mark, main entrance to the city; Doge’s Palace, museum in piazza San Marco, residence of the city’s ruler during the Republic of Venice; Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, famous for its external winding staircase; campo San Samuele, near Palazzo Malipiero on the Grand Canal; Palazzo Grimani in campo San Boldo, Sestiere di San Polo; and Ponte Consafelzi, built entirely of iron.
