The film is the cinema adaptation of the 2014 play by Emma Dante. It follows five orphaned sisters from childhood to old age in an apartment on the outskirts of Palermo. The passing of time is clear to see in their changing faces and bodies while their house, full of life, happy and sad memories (and doves), is always the same despite aging with them.
On the day that marks their existences forever, the girls leave their house, walking by river Oreto, cross the park of Villa Lampedusa with its reconstructions of various species of dinosaur and head for the Charleston – a historic, art nouveau bathing resort in Mondello inaugurated in 1913 – to spend some carefree hours by the sea.
