Where it was filmed 'Queer'

Luca Guadagnino’s Queer starring Daniel Craig is an Italian-American co-production, produced by The Apartment, Frenesy, Fremantle North America. Set in Mexico City in the 1940s, it is the semi-autobiographical story of Lee, who escapes from a drug bust in New Orleans. He becomes infatuated with Allerton, a sailor on leave and drug addict, who, although indifferent to his advances, eventually gives in, but only enough to make Lee's sexual desires even more obsessive. Together, they journey to South America in search of a drug known as "Yage", which Lee believes will make him a psychic. The film was shot at Cinecittà (Rome) and in various locations in Sicily.

The exteriors of Latin America in the 1940s were recreated on the island. The botanical gardens and the Kalsa neighborhood of Palermo stood in for Mexico: piazza Magione became a Mexico City market, with wooden carts and fruit and vegetable stalls, while the botanical garden was used as a Mexican forest. Buonfornello, hamlet of Termini Imerese (province of Palermo), and Selinunte, at the mouth of the Belice River (with stilt houses, boats and wrecks) in the province of Trapani, were used to create Panama.
