The “ghost” town of Stazzano Vecchio rises amidst woods, olive and cherry orchards in a solitary valley of the Sabina Romana area near the rural borgo of Stazzano, a hamlet of Palombara (RM). Easily accessible, even if privately owned, it was first inhabited in the 4th century during the reign of Constantine, probably on initiative of the Abbey of Farfa and later by the Savelli and Orsini families. Over the following centuries, the small centre underwent a low and inexorable decline and was definitively abandoned after the earthquake of 24 April 1901. Its ruins include a castle, with square central keep and four circular towers, the Church of Santa Maria where the apse can still be identified despite the crumbling ruins and the two main thoroughfares.
