In the series Un’estate fa, Lino Guanciale plays Elio, a fifty-year-old lawyer who spends all his time with his family or at work. The discovery of the body of Arianna, his teenage love who mysteriously disappeared during a camping holiday, changes his present and past. Shocked by the news, Elio has a car accident, loses consciousness and awakes to find himself in 1990. And so begins his journey between the present and 1990 as he searches desperately for the truth so he can exonerate himself from the accusation of having killed her.
Filming took place in Apulia and Rome. Summer 1990 was shot in Apulia, reconstructing the era with TV footage of Italia '90, camping with friends, summer flirtations, bonfires on the beach, and telephone booths, endless card games, the table football matches. The setting is the Ionian coast of Salento, in the most evocative coves of the Parco Naturale di Porto Selvaggio (Nardò), Sannicola, Porto Cesareo e Gallipoli. The bright colours of the sea and sky, typical of the latitude, and the warm breeze that ruffles the characters’ hair emphasize the idea of an endless summer, a sort of permanent holiday that is only broken when a young girl disappears.
In Rome, the previously disused and deserted Castel Fusano campsite was revived to act as a location for several scenes set in summer 1990 when the teenage characters spent their days camping, and others set in the present day with a setting that features regrown vegetation after an accidental fire (which actually occurred in the campsite) erased all traces of the past, or almost.
Great care was also taken with the "present day" settings in Rome: these elegant but occasionally dark locations create a mysterious and intriguing atmosphere. They were chosen to create the atmosphere of suspense and mystery that permeates the entire series, highlighting the contrasts between the two eras that are intertwined in the plot.
