One of Italy’s Most Beautiful Towns, and recipient of the Orange Flag awarded by the Touring Club of Italy, Locorotondo sits high on a plateau in the south-eastern part of the Murge dei Trulli, and the heart of Itria Valley, less than 10km from Alberobello. Its name (“round place”) indicates the characteristic circular shape of the town’s historical centre whose origins date to around 1000 C.E. when farmers built a number of simple cottages on the hilltop, including cummerse (small houses with pitched roofs) typical of the area. Rising above the swathe of sparkling white houses of the town centre are the bell towers of the town's many churches, including the Churches of the Addolorata, Holy Spirit, St. Nicholas, St. Roch, and Our Lady of the Chain. The Church of St. Mary della Greca boasts a Renaissance polyptych dedicated to the Madonna of the Roses and a sculptural group of St. George on horseback.
The Wine Trail through the Itria Valley stops off at Locorotondo, which produces an excellent DOC white wine.
