An ancient and fertile land, Manduria stretches out across the provinces of Taranto, Lecce and Brindisi. The road sign at its entrance welcomes the visitor to the "Town of the Messapians" and traces of this courageous people are everywhere, in the large necropolis and the thick megalithic walls, which bound the old centre. Manduria contains treasure from other ages and events, whose traces are visible in the alleys and small squares which open unexpectedly in the ancient centre. A succession of noble palaces and more humble buildings line the streets paved with black lava rock which extend into the countryside, where they become the background to rows of Primitivo vines. These streets lead from columns framing the imposing portals of historical palaces and the Imperiali Castle, with its one hundred rooms, to the labyrinth of streets inside the Jewish Ghetto, which stands beneath the rose window hewn into the Romanesque façade of the Chiesa Matrice, protected by stone lions.
