Situated in the Parco Naturale Regionale Valle del Treja, the town of Calcata (VT), considered by many archaeologists to be one of the most important extant examples of a small medieval fortified centre in Italy, rises on a formation of tuff rock that dates to the last great eruption of the volcano of Vico which produced red tuff with black slag. The town dominates the valley of the Treja river from above.
Abandoned in the early 1900s, the borgo gives the impression of being frozen in time, a characteristic that attracted artists in the 1970s who transformed it into a hotbed for the arts and artisan crafts.
The characteristic medieval borgo, with the Anguillara Baronial Palace, the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, Piazza Roma and Via Garibaldi, has often been used as a film location, including in famous productions such as Le avventure di Pinocchio (Comencini 1972), Amici Miei (Monicelli 1975) and Nostalghia (Tarkovsky 1983).
