Castiglione in Teverina (VT) is located on a hill offering a panoramic view over the Tiber Valley and Lake Alviano, with Monti Amerini in the distance.
Surrounded by modern residential buildings, the evocative historical centre is tightly packed with a number of ancient small houses. Settled since prehistoric times (as confirmed by the discovery of numerous utensils), it quickly became a flourishing Etruscan centre, later to be invaded by the Romans and the Barbarians. However, the village as it appears today was founded no earlier than the 14th century by residents who, fleeing the 1351 destruction of Paterno by the Monaldeschi, joined forces with the handful of inhabitants who had sparsely populated the hill since the 11th century.
The wealth of architecture here includes: the Collegiate Church of St. Philip and St. James (completed in 1630), the Rocca Monaldeschi (13th century) and the country Church of the Madonna of the Snow commissioned in the early 1500s by Pope Alexander VI, famous for the rites it held in ancient times.
