Bagnaia, hamlet of Viterbo, first made an appearance in history in 963 when it was known as Bangaria. Given by the Pope to the Bishop of Viterbo in the Middle Ages, a growing focus on architecture reached its height in the first half of the 1500s with the building of Villa Lante, commissioned by Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara and designed by Jacopo Barozzi known as il Vignola.
The urban layout of the borgo was redesigned in 1576 by the Sienese architect Tommaso Ghinucci, whose work culminated in Piazza XX Settembre, declaredly inspired by Piazza del Popolo in Rome. The key element of Bagnaia’s religious and folkloristic heritage, St Anthony’s Fire, is celebrated here on 16 January with a pyre that reaches over 8m in height and 30m in circumference.
