Celleno Antica is located in Celleno, in the province of Viterbo. The ancient village rises 350 meters high and about 1.5 km from the new center. It is located on a tuff spur, it rises between two streams that gradually flow towards the Tiber River. The tuff base where the village rests is unfortunately subject to a slow and progressive erosion which is seriously endangering its very stability.
The area of ??Celleno Antica, squeezed between Lake Bolsena to the west and the mid-valley of the Tiber to the east, is typically rural in appearance and has mixed crops typical of the Tuscia area. Thus, tree crops such as cherry, vine and olive are perfectly integrated with herbaceous crops such as cereals and meadows used for grazing. This cultural diversity creates a beautiful landscape throughout the area. This becomes particularly suggestive during the cherry blossom period, of which the Cellenese area is particularly rich.
Searching for the origins of Celleno Antica can be quite a difficult task, especially if you want to go back to the exact date of its foundation. Despite this premise, a data on the origins of this ancient settlement is given to us by Dioniso of Alicarnasso. In his writings Dioniso claims that the city was founded by Italo in memory of his daughter Cilenia many years before the founding of Rome.
