Pietro sees the world around him value and watch him, praise him and push him off the pedestal. He needs conflicting drives to function: he must know with absolute certainty that he is worth a lot, but with equal certainty that he is worth nothing and everything can be lost at any moment.

Locations in Rome included the Quadraro district (Tuscolano) south-east of Rome, and Bravetta, in particular via degli Arcelli, in the eastern quadrant of the capital. Pietro takes centre stage at meetings in the Vallicelliana library, in via della Chiesa Nuova, in the historic centre.

Pietro and Teresa have a stormy love affair. After yet another argument, she suggests they tell each other an unspeakable secret that will bind them forever. Of course, they break up shortly after. The end of a relationship often lights the fuse for the next one, especially for those who need reassurance. Just days before his wedding to Nadia, Teresa reappears in Pietro's life, bringing with her the shadow of their confessions, almost as a warning: "Watch yourself". From that moment on, the secret they exchanged hangs threateningly over him: good will rests on a bad conscience and now Pietro will never again forget his.
