Giuseppe Battiston makes his debut behind the camera with Io vivo altrove!, a film loosely based on Gustave Flaubert’s novel Bouvard and Pécuchet, where the French writer's bourgeois protagonists become men with the same name tired of life in Rome: Fausto Biasutti (Battiston) is a librarian trapped in the monotony of his job; Fausto Perbellini (Rolando Ravello) is employed by a gas company and is still attached to his maternal home and its rules.
After their chance meeting on a field trip for amateur photographers, they find out they can finally make their shared dream of a life in the countryside in contact with nature come true. Biasutti inherits his grandmother's old house in the imaginary village of Valvana in the hills of north-eastern Italy. But the farmers’ life they longed for is not easy: their attempts to produce craft beer and to farm are unsuccessful. Furthermore, they have to deal with the prejudices and chilly welcome of the residents, including their elderly neighbour Gina (Ariella Reggio), who has her eye on the old house.
Locations included the small village of Valle di Suffumbergo, a mountain hamlet in the municipality of Faedis (Udine) on the slopes of mount San Lorenzo, also known as the "balcony of Friuli" because of its panoramic position. The entire town was occupied by the production and an abandoned farmhouse was adapted to shoot some interiors: the rectory, the library and Perbellini's room.
Other locations were provided by the region of Lazio: the village and square of Castel di Guido (province of Rome), monti Cimini and Riserva naturale del Lago di Vico.
