Atrani is the smallest municipality in Southern Italy in terms of territory and one of the few on the Amalfi Coast that has remained a small fishing village. The beauty of the narrow streets, the arches and the steps and the charm of the small square that leads to the beach and the sea shore make Atrani a tremendously seductive filming location.
The Church of San Salvatore de' Birecto, built in 940 and subsequently adapted in a neoclassical style, looks over Piazzetta Umberto I. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena dates to 1274: it has a Baroque facade, a tiled cupola and a square bell tower that is the symbol of the village. The Church of Santa Maria del Bando dates to the 12th century.
On the nearby eastern slopes of Monte Aureo, immersed in luxuriant vegetation, is the Cave of Masaniello, which takes its name from the revolutionary who took refuge there. Also noteworthy is the Cave of the Saints whose entrance is decorated with Byzantine style 12th century frescoes and framed by the support arch of an ancient water channel.
