Fiumefreddo Bruzio (Cosenza) is one of the oldest settlements on the Tyrrhenian coastline in Calabria. Perched on a rocky promontory, an outcropping of Mount Cucuzzo, Fiumefreddo stands in a defensive – and elevated – position, encircled by ancient walls, with fortified gates and watch towers, stretching out towards the sea.
The historical centre is filled with small squares and open spaces, ancient chapels and noble palaces. It is accessed by a crenelated gate that leads directly to piazza del Popolo, which is bounded by three important monuments: the Chiesa Matrice di San Michele Arcangelo dating to 1540, with paintings by Francesco Solimena and Giuseppe Pascaletti, flanked on the right by palazzo del Barone Del Bianco and on the left by palazzo Gaudiosi.
Numerous stone paved alleys lead to via Risorgimento which leads to palazzo Zupi and the ruined Castle della Valle, built over a sheer drop in the 13th century and housing works by Salvatore Fiume. Piazza Vittorio Venetowhere 16th century palazzo Pignatelli is located is the social heart of the town. The 9th century Church of Our Lady of Suffering and the seaside Church of St. Domenica are also notable.
