Collalto Sabino in the southern part of the province of Rieti stands on the boundary between the regions of Lazio and Abruzzo. The two borgos of Ricetto and San Lorenzo are part of the municipality whose territory is included in the nature reserve of Mount Navegna and Mount Cervia (the Carseolani range). The altitude of Collalto Sabino ranges from 554m to 1149m above sea level.
The origins of Collalto date back to the Lombards. Saracen incursions convinced the few inhabitants who had remained in the area to build a primitive defence tower and the residential settlement grew up around it.
The borgo retains its encircling wall and is gathered around the Baronial Castle which has conserved its 17th century appearance with a square central tower and two corner towers. The castle also includes a large park with an ancient well and keep on the top.
The 16th century defensive wall encircles stone houses and narrow alleys with ancient portals. The borgo also features an octagonal fountain in piazza della Podesteria, Palazzo Latini (13th/17th century) and the Parish Church of St Lucia, in the cemetery, which conserves a fresco from the 1500s.
