Piazza Bra – Verona

Description

Piazza Bra, in the heart of Verona, owes its name to a contraction of braida, a toponym that probably derives from "breit", the German word for wide.
The square opens out before the most symbolic of Verona’s monuments: the Arena. The square began to take shape around the mid-1500s when Palazzo degli Honorij (designed by Sanmicheli) and numerous noble residences to the northwest were built.
The square’s present-day appearance was created in the late 1700s when the ‘liston’ – a wide sidewalk – was paved in pink Verona marble.
Palazzo Barbieri, Palazzo della Gran Guardia and the gates of Bra all stand on the square.
