On the border between the regions of Apulia and Campania, Bovino is a hilltop town overlooking the valley of the Cervaro stream, approximately 30km from Foggia.
Traces of the Middle Ages can be found intact in this miniscule village which has been awarded the Touring Club Italiano’s prestigious Orange Flag and whose paved alleyways, little white houses, surrounding green countryside and 800 imposing stone gateways make it one of “Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages”.
The majestic Ducal Castle, the ancient noble residence that dominates the entire Vallo di Bovino houses a painting of The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian attributed to Mattia Preti. History recounts that Manfredi, son of Emperor Frederick II, slept here before the Battle of Benevento.
The Co-Cathedral has a characteristic Romanesque façade with gable roof and holds precious Byzantine sculptural fragments.
