Rocca Sinibalda is a medieval borgo in the eastern area of Sabina set amidst thick forest in the Turano valley. The borgo is dominated by the Cesarini Castle, also medieval in origin, although renovations carried out in the 16th century by Baldassarre Peruzzi, on commission from Cardinal Alessandro Cesarini, have given it a mixture of styles, somewhere between a medieval fortress, Renaissance palace and Gothic manor house. The building, which has the shape of an eagle with folded wings when seen from above, has crenelated towers on the front while the north wing housed the noble residence and a defensive structure. The interior has frescoes inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphosis with inserts of stories from Cesarini family history. Its rooms today host contemporary art exhibitions and installations. The hanging gardens connected to the castle were redesigned by lppolito Pizzetti in 1972.
Everything in the alleyways of Posticciola, a hamlet of Rocca Sinibalda, is painted or decorated, from manhole covers to barrels. Part of the Path of St. Benedict leads from Posticciola to a 11th century Romanesque bridge, further down the River Turano is the lake Turano reservoir.
