The director chose to shoot in Torino in locations that were popular with students in the early 1900s: the University Rectorate in via Po; Caffè Baratti e Milano in Piazza Castello, where Mario sees Dorina for the first time through a window; the Parco del Valentino, where Mario dives into the River Po to save someone; Teatro Carignano where the students perform a play and outside between Piazza Carignano and Piazza Carlo Alberto; and the area around the Gran Madre: Dorina and her mother live in Piazza Maria Teresa and the seamstresses’ atelier is in via Bogino. Several interiors were shot at Cinecittà Studios.
