The city of Altamura is located less than 50km inland from Bari, close to the regional border with Basilicata. The historical centre, located just inside the ancient walls, starts at Porta Bari and is full of palaces, churches, and the claustri (small, closed courtyards) typical of the area. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption stands in the heart of the town, a magnificent example of Apulian Romanesque architecture combined with the elegant Gothic style of Emperor Frederick II who commissioned it. On the outskirts of town, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Cammino is another highlight.
In the surrounding countryside, the famous Pulo, a remarkable karst sinkhole roughly 100m deep, can be found in the Alta Murgia National Park. Many exceptional fossils have been discovered in the area, including Altamura Man, the remains of a complete human skeleton dating to the Palaeolithic period, and 30,000 dinosaur tracks in the Pontrelli neighbourhood.
