Home to cliffs and 83 species of orchid, in the heart of the Gargano National Park, Mattinata spreads out over two hills, surrounded by olive groves and forests and the Adriatic shore. Built over the Roman city of Matinum, Mattinata has a long history which is conserved in the archaeological artefacts of the Museo Civico and the ruins of Roman villas, necropolises and abbeys that lie along the archaeological trekking routes that traverse the countryside. The Rione Junno, ancient heart of Mattinata, holds traces of the first dwellings of the area, known as pagliai (haystacks) which were built from rough-hewn, interlocking stones. Elegant Palazzo Mantuano (now the Municipal offices and library) and Palazzo Barretta stand amidst alleyways, stone staircases and small squares. Following the coast towards Vieste, the Gargano peninsula offers some of the most beautiful areas of shoreline, like the Bay of Vignanotica, with pebble beaches and rock caves, and the Bay of Faraglioni, with its dunes covered in vegetation and transparent waters.
