With very ancient origins, probably dating to the Bronze Age, Sutri (VT) experienced a boom under the Etruscans. The village flourished from agriculture and commerce with other Etrurian cities until the arrival of the Romans in 383 B.C.E.. In the early Middle Ages, Sutri suffered the same fate as many other nearby feudal villages, passing from one powerful family to another until Charlemagne decided to assign it to his disinherited sister who, legend has it, gave birth here to the famous Roland, later named paladin of France.
The surrounding area holds a wealth of archaeological artefacts from all ages. These include: a Roman amphitheatre entirely carved out of tuff rock, the Park of the Antichissima Città di Sutri, an Etruscan necropolis discovered on the hill facing the residential centre with tombs dating from 6th to 4th century B.C.E., Etruscan walls incorporated into the medieval fortifications, the Church of Our Lady of Childbirth, a medieval building which stands on a Roman mithraeum and the Cathedral of Romanesque origin.
