Entirely surrounded by walls with merlons, Vitorchiano (VT) stands high on a tuff rock cliff, looming steeply above large conical rocks that watch over the surrounding ravines. In a splendid natural landscape with forests of oaks, beech, elm and chestnut, this small medieval borgo grew up with the growing trade and request for peperino, the grey-coloured stone of magmatic origin found in this area and characteristic of Medieval and Renaissance buildings.
The historical centre features enchanting little squares, narrow alleyways, and interesting residences with external staircases, balconies and arches. The Palazzo Comunale preserves important archive documents, the Casa del Podestà and the Churches of Sant’Amanzio and Santa Maria Assunta preserve relevant works of art.
Vitorchiano began a privileged relationship with Rome in the 13th century when the borgo became a feud of the Capital after being liberated from a siege by Viterbo military troops. The population of Vitorchiano made a vow of solemn submission to Rome and in turn was granted the right to use the city’s symbol of the Lupa – the She Wolf – and to provide men for the Capitoline Guard. There was a small Jewish colony here in the 16th century.
