The series Il Clandestino focuses on Luca Travaglia (Edoardo Leo), a former anti-terrorism chief, who leaves the police after a violent attack kills his wife. Moving to Milan, he works as a nightclub bouncer and tries to numb the pain with alcohol. The wall he has raised between himself and life begins to crumble when he crosses paths with Palitha (Hassani Shapi), an enterprising and over-the-top Sri Lankan who involves him in setting up an unlikely detective agency.
In a Milan with a thousand faces, a thousand souls, a thousand languages and dialects, Travaglia gradually finds a new place in the world, putting himself at the service of the "last", those who society ignores, and the "first", those whose position means they cannot risk being seen. He becomes the man that everyone in Milan, Italians and foreigners, calls "Il Clandestino". Travaglia's investigations and private life unfold in many places in the city: from Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala through the connecting galleria Vittorio Emanuele; porta Garibaldi, the dock and the navigli (canals) – in particular the Pavese canal – where he often walks alone and where he hands a former colleague a mysterious envelope; and the Legnaia Courtyard, a 15th century courtyard inside historic Ca'Granda (now housing the state university of Milan) where Travaglia is seated at a bar table on several occasions.
In addition to the Lombard capital, a significant part of the filming took place in Rome. The Eternal City is the setting for flashbacks to Travaglia's previous life, when he was head of anti-terrorism and had a relationship with Khadija (Lavinia Longhi). Capitoline locations included the historic centre and piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere.
