Who is Diabolik? In March 1968, five years after publishing of the first number of the legendary comic, the Giussani sisters tried to answer the question writing the album that is probably the most famous of the King of Terror saga: Diabolik, chi sei?. This, the third and final chapter of the films directed by the Manetti Bros about the masked thief, produced by Mompracem and Rai Cinema, was filmed together with the second instalment Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!.
While the first film (location) shows Diabolik from Eva Kant’s point of view and the second from Inspector Ginko’s, the third film focuses on Diabolik’s own perspective.
The film is no longer set in the Sixties, as the narrative has jumped a decade, changing sets and costumes. Diabolik (Giacomo Gianniotti) has to tackle a ruthless gang of criminals who capture him alongside Inspector Ginko (Valerio Mastandrea). The antagonists finally find themselves face to face, imprisoned in a cell from which there is no way out and certain of inevitable death. On this occasion that the thief reveals his mysterious past to the policeman...
Bologna is once again Clerville along with neighbouring San Lazzaro di Savena. Once again there are glimpses of Trieste and Milan, while the third chapter debuts scenes shot in Calabria, in particular the Palmi tuna fishery and the island of Dino in front of Praia a Mare. The flashbacks of Diabolik's childhood are set here, presumably in the 1940s when an unnamed child is welcomed onto a mysterious island where, grows up learning all the secrets of King (Paolo Calabresi) and his gang which help him become an elusive and feared thief.
