Amidst the ruins of poverty-stricken, post-war Naples, young Carmine and Celestina help each other out in the struggle to survive. One night, they embark as stowaways on a ship headed to New York to go and live with Celestina's sister who emigrated years before. The two children join the many Italian emigrants seeking fortune in America and disembark in an unknown metropolis, a place that, many adventures later, they will learn to call home.
