Throughout the film, the elegant and picture-perfect city of Milan is contrasted with the more rural and basic environment of the Ligurian countryside.
Milan is presented in all its magnificence in various shots of the Duomo and the streets of the centre, from Corso Venezia to Via Vivaio and the square that runs from Via Senato to Via Mozart. It is here that the Recchi family lives, in Villa Necchi Campiglio, the jewel in the crown of Milanese architecture, which was designed by architect Piero Portaluppi and donated to the FAI (the Italian Environmental Fund) in 2001, which restored it to its former glory.
In direct contrast, the natural and simple environment inhabited by Antonio, which Emma also runs to, the Ligurian locations of Sanremo, Dolceacqua and Castel Vittorio. The unspoiled nature, country roads and picturesque towns are, for Emma, a way of escaping a cold and loveless life.

Tancredi Recchi and his wife Emma are members of the Lombard upper classes and live with their three children in a villa in Milan. Trancredi and his son Gianluca’s cold indifference is in direct contrast to the attitude of the other members of the family, in particular Eduardo, who decides to open a restaurant with young chef Antonio. The arrival of this young man on the scene leads to the breaking of family ties, to the point of driving Emma to escape to the country and along the Ligurian coast to rediscover love.
