The main set for the series is the suburbs of Naples, in Scampia, but a number of scenes are shot in other neighbourhoods of the city, Campania and other regions, and even abroad. More often than not, the lavish interiors of the houses of the criminals and restaurants contrast with the images of dilapidated neighbourhoods, the open-air locations of their trafficking activities.
The series is set mainly in Vele di Scampia, a triangular-shaped housing complex dating back to the 1960s, while the exterior shots of the Savastano residence were shot at the villa of boss Francesco Gallo, in Parco Penniniello in Torre Annunziata.
The series opens with Ciro and Attilio at a petrol station filling up a jerry can. They need the petrol to set fire to the house of Salvatore Conte’s mother: we’re in Gianturco, opposite the former refinery, an industrial area of Naples which is almost completely abandoned and links the city centre to the districts of Barra, San Giovanni and Ponticelli.
The ambush triggers a series of retaliations that culminate in the order to kill Salvatore Conte and his entire clan. The assassination attempt is planned at Circumvesuviana station in Via Selva, in San Vitaliano, while Conte hides in a hat factory (actually IFA – Industria Filtri Aria in San Vitaliano), but Conte manages to escape and seeks shelter abroad. Attilio, Ciro’s mentor, is killed and he mourn him on a roof in San Vitaliano.
Other scenes were shot in Castel Volturno, which, in the series, is the imaginary town of Casavatore, where Genny meets Noemi (in a club which is actually Studio Uno, in Caserta), the girlfriend of the young local boss’s godson.
In the second episode, a highway patrol squad stops Don Pietro for a roadside check and arrests him when they find a bag with money and cocaine in it. In the third episode, we discover that he has been taken to Poggioreale. Behind the prison sits the Centro Direzionale, a series of skyscrapers designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange.
The fourth episode focuses on the square in which the Nigerians deal drugs: we’re at the Bipiani di Ponticelli, a housing complex built for victims of the earthquake of Irpinia of 1980.
In the series finale, Ciro spreads the word that he will accompany his daughter to a theatrical performance, drawing Genny in: the auditorium is that of the church of the Immacolata e San Vincenzo, in Naples.
