Where it was filmed 'The Decameron'

The whole film is set in working-class Naples, but filming actually took place in different locations all over Italy. We start with the first novella by young Andreuccio who, after loosing all the money he won in a scam involving a fake stepsister, manages to lay his hands on a precious ring belonging to a dead bishop. The stories take place against the backdrop of the medieval town of Casertavecchia, in the province of Caserta, with its historic alleys and the Castle, the wall of which are shown throughout the film. Also in the province of Caserta, in Piedimonte Cesolla, is Palazzo Cocozza, a 19th-century building whose magnificent gardens are the scene for the novella by Caterina di Valbona and young Riccardo.

The Church of the SS Annunziata in Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast, is the setting for the episode centering around Masetto, the peasant who, pretending to be deaf and dumb, manages to get into a convent full of nuns and become their lover.

The linking story of the film on Giotto’s pupil, played by Pasolini himself, on the other hand, was actually filmed in Naples, in the picturesque alleyways of the city and the historical Church of Santa Chiara.

In the novella about Ser Ciappelletto, the dishonest protagonist, after moving to Germany and taking to his death bed, ends up managing to get himself revered as a saint. The episode was shot in Trentino Alto Adige, more specifically Runkelstein Castle in Bolzano and the Abbey of Novacella in Varna.
