The city of Altissia, which features in Final Fantasy XV, was inspired by Venice. Not only because it is defined as the ‘City of Water’, but because the canals, bridges and architecture are directly reminiscent of the city. The city’s cathedral is clearly modelled on St. Mark’s Basilica, and there’s a location inspired by the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront. Some of the banners also recall the red and yellow of the flag of St. Mark. Also, among the water-based means of transport featured are actual gondolas (with gondoliers to boot). Finally worth mentioning are the details such as the kiosks and umbrellas outdoors.

Final Fantasy is one of the most long-running sagas in the history of video games: the first instalment dates all the way back to 1987. With alternating success, the main series hit its 15th instalment in 2016. Between its creation and then, a whole host of spin-offs, side adventures, books, films and anime cartoons were also released. The merchandise available for the series shows just how popular it is, in Japan and all over the world. Among the most noteworthy instalments is most certainly Final Fantasy VII, the first to be officially released in the West.
It is a series of role-playing games which, despite featuring a number of recurring elements, always gives players different narratives from one instalment to the next. Some chapters have spawned their own direct sequels.
