The Tuscan city of Carrara stars in the international production The Brutalist, by Brady Corbet, in competition at the Venice Film Festival 81. The cast includes Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones. After shooting in Budapest, the production moved to Carrara where locations included the storied Riacci grocery store in corso Rosselli, and the Bettogli and Bombarda quarries.
Venice also features and archive materials from the first Architecture Biennale were also incorporated.
The film tells the story of László Toth (Adrien Brody), a visionary architect who fled post-war Hungary with his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) heading to America. The meeting with a mysterious, wealthy client (Guy Pearce) will change their lives forever when he commissions a large modernist monument that is destined to become a pearl of the urban skyline and tests László’s bond with his wife.

1947, Holocaust survivors, László Toth and his wife Erzsébet, decide to leave Hungary for the United States where Toth, a talented and visionary architect, hopes to find fertile ground for his projects. After an initial period of difficulty, where the family tackle humiliation and hunger, Toth meets a wealthy industrialist, Harrison Lee Van Buren, who commissions a large modernist monument. It is the most important challenge of László’s career, but he will have to deal with another side of the coin.
