Based on the play La Palestra by Giorgio Scianna and written for the screen by the D’Innocenzo brothers, Stefano Cipani’s film Educazione Fisica was shot entirely in a gym built in Teatro 8 at Cinecittà. An intentionally “spare and bare” space where the focus is on the conversation and the central theme of the piece which is both urgent and contemporary and regards that sense of responsibility that both invades and evades the characters.
The school gym becomes an improvised courtroom when the headmistress (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) calls a group of parents – Angela Finocchiaro, Raffaella Rea, Sergio Rubini, Claudio Santamaria – to discuss an unpleasant event apparently caused by their children.
