Those About To Die, a 10-part historical drama directed by Roland Emmerich, is an epic immersion in the historical arena of the Roman Empire. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins as emperor Vespasian, Iwan Rheon (Tenax), Tom Hughes (Titus Flavianus), Sara Martins (Cala) and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Viggo).
79 BC, Rome is the centre of the world. An enormous influx of slaves from the growing empire flows to the capital to serve as labour. The Roman population, bored, restless, and increasingly violent, is kept in check by two things: free food and spectacular entertainment with chariot races and gladiator fights.
The games at the Circus Maximus are controlled by four corporations owned by the patricians: the blue, red, white and green factions. Having a share in a faction is considered the most precious of all treasures in the city. As the plebian taste for entertainment becomes increasingly cynical and bloodthirsty, a new stadium becomes necessary: the Colosseum - designed specifically for gladiatorial combat. The size of the stadium is enormous, as is the grandeur of the battles between gladiators and animals, and the crime associated with the thriving gambling industry. Beneath the stands, thousands of people work and live, including many who would die for the games.
The principal backdrop for this fast-paced story is ancient Rome as reconstructed in Cinecittà Studios in Rome. The production also used the military shooting range in Nettuno (Rome) as a location. Many scenes were produced with the help of computer graphics.
