The film opens with a view of Verona, wrapped in mist at dawn. This was the setting chosen by Shakespeare for his most famous story of impossible love. However, Zeffirelli’s Verona is actually a mix of locations that can be found in Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria.
Some scenes were shot in the piazza of the medieval village of Tuscania (VT) and inside its Basilica of St. Peter where Friar Lawrence meets and later marries the two young lovers. The crypt here stands in for the interior of the Capulet vault where the couple dies. The exterior of the church, including the imposing staircase, the piazza and surrounding buildings were recreated at Cinecittà.
The historical centre of Gubbio (PG) was the location for the duels that will force Romeo into exile in Mantova. In the film, Via Ducale leads to the Montague household. Other locations can be found in Montagnana (PD).
The love story between Juliet and Romeo begins when he sneaks into a Capulet party in Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza (SI). When the love-struck Romeo climbs the high walls of the house, we are however suddenly at Palazzo Borghese in Artena (RM) where the famous balcony scene was shot.

One of Shakespeare’s most famous works. In Verona, the doomed love between Romeo and Juliet overcomes the rivalry between their two families: the Montagues and the Capulets.
