The first monument seen in the film, as Moreno (Marco Giallini) dresses and leaves in the opening title sequence, is the Basilica di Sant’Aurea in Ostia Antica. He is heading out to meet his friends Sebastiano (Alessandro Gassmann) and Giuseppe (Gianmarco Tognazzi), together they have come up with the idea of a tour of all the key places where the Banda della Magliana was active to try and make some money.
The three friends set up a stall in piazza di San Callisto, in the Trastevere neighbourhood of Rome. On the other side of the Tiber river, is via del Pellegrino, one of the places on the tour, as the newly minted tour guides explain, where the gang’s boss Renatino (seen later with the face of Edoardo Leo) was killed on 2 February 1990 outside number 65. Not far away is vicolo del Bollo where, later in the film but earlier in time, Giuseppe buys Panini figurines of the 1982 World Cup. Also close by is the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare where Renatino was buried and where the band’s treasure is hidden in the basement. Then over to the Ostiense neighbourhood and the shadow of the Gazometro, in via del Commercio 36 to be precise, for the “most famous nightclub of the 1980s” managed by the band.
The headquarters for the Banda della Magliana is located in piazza della Colonnaccia, purpose built in Videa Studios along with other sets. In 2018 it is a Chinese-managed bar where they jump back in time to 1982. When the three realise that they have travelled through time, they are sitting on the steps of the Church of Sant’Agostino, in piazza di Sant’Agostino near piazza Navona in Rome. In via dei Polacchi, in the Sant’Angelo quarter, the three friends eat tricoloured lollies, created for the World Cup. Disguised as the rock group Kiss, the band attempts to rob a bank in piazza Mastai, on viale Trastevere.
