Where it was filmed 'The Commander'

Edoardo De Angelis’s film Comandante reconstructed the adventurous story of Commander Salvatore Todaro (Pierfrancesco Favino), legendary WWII hero of the seas, between Taranto (at the Naval Dock) and Rome.

The main setting of the film is the Cappellini submarine of the 1940 Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) idiosyncratically commanded by Salvatore Todaro: its prow reinforced with steel to repel sudden attacks; cannon shots fired on emersion to challenge the enemy; and a crew armed with daggers for potential, and unlikely, hand to hand combat.  The submarine (73 m long, 70 tons of steel) was meticulously rebuilt using material, mostly photographs, found in the Navy’s Ufficio Storico. Its construction, in collaboration with Cinecittà, required more than 100 engineers, builders and artisans: work began on 23 May 2022 and was completed 8 months later, in late October 2022 with a launch at the dock at the Naval arsenal.

The Cappellini may now be used to house a museum of naval history with multimedia content.

Plot
WWII, Salvatore Todaro commands the Cappellini submarine of the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina). While navigating the Atlantic in October 1940, a merchant ship “the Kabalo”, travelling in blackout through the dark night (we later learn that it is Belgian), suddenly opens fire on the Italian submarine and crew.  Commander Todaro uses cannons to sink the ship and takes a historic decision to follow maritime law: saving the 26 Belgian crew members from drowning and intending to take them to the nearest safe harbour.  To gather them aboard, the submarine must stay on the surface for 3 days, making it visible to the enemy and putting his life and that of his men at risk.
