Cattiva coscienza is a romantic comedy where a fantasy element – Consciences exist and live in a dimension parallel to ours where, from a distance, they take care of us – is inserted into a contemporary story about feelings.
The only way to drown out the voice of a Conscience is to fall in love. The story begins with this premise: on the eve of his wedding, Filippo (Scicchitano) discovers that he is in love with Valentina (Matilde Gioli). His conscience, Otto (Francesco Scianna), would do anything to maintain his record as the best Conscience in Italy, but his "protégé" no longer seems to want to follow him; to keep his position, he decides to go down to Earth, to Rome, where the film was entirely shot. The gateway to the human world is a chemical toilet on a Metro C construction site.
It is only when Otto tries to live as a human that he realizes, first-hand, the value of making mistakes and accruing experience and recognises the difference between judging and living.
