Alberto Mascia’s psychological thriller is set in a futuristic Italy, where prisons have been replaced by structures managed by a new system – Hypnos – which keeps the prisoners in “hypersleep”, a forced state of unconsciousness for the duration of their sentence, except for brief awakenings.
The futuristic prison structure is actually the Centro Ricerche ENEA in Brasimone, on the banks of lake Brasimone in the municipality of Camugnano (Bologna). During his work systematically awaking prisoners, the prison psychologist David Damiani (Stefano Accorsi) begins to note mysteries and secrets that lead him to uncover what lies behind the system. At his side is Viola (Caterina Shulha), a prisoner’s wife and the woman that David is in love with.
David is later sentenced to detention in hypersleep: on his release he goes to work in a hotel as a free man, at the Grand Hotel Colony in Rome. Following clues in a mysterious photograph that appears in his residence, David heads to piazza Mastai, in the heart of the Capital, stopping by the fountain of Pius IX.
Viola’s kidnap leads him to an elegant building with an 19th century façade where a party is being held: this is the eclectic Villa Blanc, which houses Luiss Business School at present.
Shooting locations also included Centro Ricerche Casaccia, the largest ENEA plant and laboratory complex in the country, which is located near lake Bracciano.
The awakening room and other prison interiors were built in soundstages in Rome.
