Where it was filmed 'Kidnapped'

Kidnapped tells the story of Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish child who was taken from his family in 1858 and brought up as a Catholic in the custody of Pope Pius IX, to international outcry. The cast includes Paolo Pierobon (Pope Pius IX), Fausto Russo Alesi, Barbara Ronchi, Enea Sala (Edgardo Mortara, child), Leonardo Maltese (Edgardo, boy), Filippo Timi and Fabrizio Gifuni.

The three-month shoot of Marco Bellocchio’s Kidnapped began in summer 2022 in piazza Minozzi in Roccabianca, a small village in the province of Parma, where the Mortara family house was recreated (the square was also used as a location by Gianni Amelio for Lord of the Ants). Another location was Edgardo’s birthplace, Bologna, where several rooms in Palazzo d’Accursio recreated the environment of the time, in addition to piazza Maggiore and other areas in the historic centre. The Baroque Church of San Barnaba, in the centre of Modena, also lent its interiors.

Locations also included the interiors of the synagogue of Sabbioneta (province of Mantua), a jewel that was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2008 and has previously hosted shoots for the series The Medici and the RAI drama La guerra è finita. The Oratorio dei Filippini in the heart of Rome was used to reconstruct the refectory of San Pietro in Vincoli.

Plot
1858. The Pope’s soldiers burst into the house of the Mortara family in the Jewish quarter of Bologna to seize Edgardo, their seven-year-old son. Believed to be on the point of death at the age of six months, the child had been secretly baptized. There is no appeal against Papal law so Edgardo has to be given a Catholic upbringing, although his parents will do all they can to get their son back.
