Don Giulio is the parish priest of a small town on an island. In the opening scene we see him standing on a terrace overlooking the sea. In the distance is a white lighthouse and another small island. We’re in Ventotene, in the Pontine Islands Archipelago off the coast of the Gulf of Gaeta. Before returning to Rome, he conducts a wedding in the Church of Santa Candida. At the end of the ceremony, he takes the same boat as the newlyweds to Porticciolo Romano.
Upon arriving in Rome, he is greeted by a panoramic view of the city. To the disappointment of his mother, whose house was set up in the picturesque Coppedè quarter, the protagonist is assigned to a parish church in the Roman suburbs: Santa Maria Mediatrice, in the Prenestino-Labicano quarter. Attached to the church is the parish priest’s living quarters, a football pitch and the hall used for catechesis. Near the church is the house of the former parish priest and his family.
Valentina, Don Giulio’s sister, works at a mental health institution, in a run-down building: this is Villa Flora, which sits in the park of the same name, in the Gianicolense quarter. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, has a passion for bird-watching in the mountains, at Lake Barrea (AQ) in the National Park of Abruzzo.
Saverio, a friend of Don Giulio who fell into a state of depression when his partner left him, lives cut off from the world in a crumbling loft near the Colosseum. From his bedroom window we can see the bell tower of the church of San Bernardino.
Gianni, another friend of the priest, runs a used bookstore: the Pocket2000 bookshop in Prati was used for the purpose.
In Piazza del Fante, Giulio is almost drowned in a fountain by someone who’s just taken his parking space.
In the main body of the film, a trip around the parish takes us into a chocolate factory managed by the monks. The group travels by train and stops at the station of Sacrofano in the north of Rome.
Shortly afterwards, at the Convent of San Francesco in Sermoneta (LT), Giulio feels the need to confess his inadequacies to a monk, who reveals that he was a missionary in Chile for many years.
The scene of the assault at the cinema was instead filmed at the Nuovo Sacher, not far from Trastevere.
