Tom Ripley’s (Matt Damon) arrival in Naples was shot in an art deco terminal in Palermo harbour, from here he takes a bus to Dickie’s (Jude Law) location.
The fictional village of Mongibello, south of Naples, where Dickie is living with his girlfriend Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow), was created with elements of both Ischia and Procida (NA). The bus actually leaves Tom at Ischia Ponte, beneath the imposing Aragonese Castle that looms behind. The first meeting with the American couple takes place on the beach of lungomare Cristoforo Colombo in Ischia where Marge invites Tom to their home, the 15th century Palazzo Malcovati. From the terrace of the same building, the three watch the statue emerge from the sea during the Festa della Madonna.
The centre of Mongibello was shot in the Coricella fishing village on the island of Procida. Dickie, Marge and Tom mingle with the lively residents in the ancient alleyways and squares. Via San Rocco is clearly seen when Dickie rides a vespa to meet his lover Silvana (Stefania Rocca).
Tom and Dickie go to the Galleria Principe di Napoli several times to send and receive mail. Again in Naples, some of the main characters attend the opera at Teatro di San Carlo which stands in for Rome in the story.
The first tourist stop for Dickie and Tom is the capital where they have an appointment with socialite Freddy in piazza Navona by the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Abandoned by his companions, Tom visits several sites in the city: the Campidoglio with the Capitoline Museum and the Fori Imperiali.
Their second, and final, journey together takes Dickie and Tom to Sanremo for a jazz festival. The festival location is the art deco Paradiso sul mare, a former casino on the Anzio sea front.
His new life as Dickie takes Tom back to Rome, first as a guest in the grand St Regis Hotel near piazza della Repubblica and then in a rented apartment inside Palazzo Costaguti in piazza Mattei. However, it is piazza di Spagna where Tom repeatedly meets Marge and the charming Meredith who believes him to be Dickie. Tom takes a carriage ride with Meredith across Ponte Sant’Angelo with Castel Sant’Angelo in the background.
The final chapter takes place in Venice where Tom arrives on the vaporetto. Peter is waiting for him in piazza San Marco and the pair walk past St. Mark’s Basilica. Under the square’s porticoes, Tom tells his version of the story to Dickie’s father and to Marge who arrives at the station of Santa Lucia, Grand Canal in the background. Peter conducts a concert rehearsal of church music in the Chiesa della Martorana, with its priceless mosaics, in piazza Bellini, Palermo.
Other scenes feature Porto Ercole, a hamlet of Monte Argentario in the Tuscan Maremma, and further locations were built in Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
