In Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team are tracking a terrifying new weapon that threatens the existence of humanity. In the Eternal City, Ethan and his team are seen mostly in the Sant'Angelo and Monti neighbourhoods, also driving through the centre in a yellow Fiat 500 which they reverse down the stairs of Trinità dei Monti.
A change of scene takes them to Venice, where the agents walk through the unmistakable alley between piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale. In the lagoon city, Ethan tracks evil Gabriel (Esai Morales) and the “white widow”, a dangerous arms dealer. The latter organizes an elegant party at the Ducal Palace, illuminated by hundreds of candles for the occasion. But the charm of the place cannot hold Ethan who hurtles after Gabriel along the alleys of the lagoon to the bridge of the Conzafelzi, where he learns about the tragic sacrifice made by Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) as she tried to save Grace (Hayley Atwell).
Before continuing his mission, Ethan allows himself a moment of grief on the panoramic terrace of the luxury hotel, The Gritti Palace, in Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, where he stood with Ilsa on arrival in Venice. In the background is the elegant cupola of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute.
